Nathan Fillion on Serenity’s future

Sunday, May 11th, 2008

TruckerMovie.net: We know that there’s nothing on the horizon right now but it seems to be becoming a trend for Serenity actors visiting Australia (Alan Tudyk & Jewel Staite) to tell fans that it’s not yet time to give up on another movie, but with most of the cast being very busy in your careers right now, in your opinion, is there still any reason for fans to hope or do you think that time has passed?

Nathan Fillion: Firefly was an incredible lesson for me. I really fell in love with that show and the people I was working with and the story we were telling and the character I was playing. I fell in love and when it was taken away my hopes were dashed, I was crushed entirely. I though, I was disillusioned. I was angry, I was so angry and then the fans, the fans came through and then Joss made this thing happen and then this perfect storm of positivity that the wonderful people over at Universal, taking it upon themselves to say “yeah, there’s a story to be told here and lets do it” so I’ll never give up hope. When people say “is there gonna be another Serenity” not so far as I know, I mean when there will be you’ll know. People come to me when I’m signing their autograph “Is there going to be another Serenity”, this isn’t where you’re going to find out, this isn’t going to be the arena. But I’ll never say never, I can say not right now, not that I know of, nobody’s said anything to me, I could tell you that. That’s the truth, not right now, nothing right now, that’s the fact, but never say never, I’ve learned that because there’s Serenity of course.

Jewel Staite Says More Firefly Coming

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

OK. we got your attention and we’re not exactly lying but here’s the deal.

Jewel Staite attended the Supanova Expo in Melbourne, Australia this weekend and over the two days graciously answered a lot of questions from fans of Firefly and Stargate Atlantis. During the first session Jewel was asked what she thought the storyline of Serenity would go. Jewel replied, “I always wanted Kaylee to become a mother” and added “hopefully there’ll be a Serenity 2″.

In the Q&A session the following day, a fan asked if there was any reason to still hope for another movie, Jewel’s response was “Absolutely!”.

Jewel also told fans that she’d been asked to go to LA in the Spring to record a commentary for the new special edition of Firefly that they’re working on. Great news for fans, but Jewel wonders why they don’t just make more instead of re-releasing it again.

Alan Tudyk talks again about Serenity Sequel

Friday, February 1st, 2008

Alan TudykIt seems that our much loved Alan Tudyk is at it again, he believes wholeheartedly that there is still reason for us to hold out hope for another Serenity movie. He recently spoke with MovieHole, an Australian movie site and as part of the Death at a Funeral DVD release interview, Alan was asked about his latest thoughts on a Serenity sequel.

Alan noted that Joss Whedon had had a word with him over his comments made during an Australian appearance that were posted on youtube asking how he was planning to finance it, but Alan was eager to indicate that while a movie is not in the works, and there’s nothing official to pin our hopes on, in his own opinion, there will be another movie.

“”My opinion - I have to couch it that way - is yes”, says Tudyk

With that in mind, we’re in the process of compiling a list on this site of current fan campaigns to help fans do their bit so come back here and keep your eyes open to see how you can help.

At the Armageddon Multimedia Expo in Melbourne, Australia on 13 Oct 07, Alan Tudyk discussed the possibility of a second Serenity movie.

Alan was quoted in an interview at moviehole.net as having indicated there was a chance of a Serenity sequel earlier this month however there have been rumours that Nathan Fillion has denied any such possibility.

Well, now you have a chance to hear it from Alan yourself in this short video clip - he says “…I heard it from Nathan so if it turns out not to be true you can blame him…”

Nathan Fillion keen on Serenity Sequel

Thursday, October 4th, 2007

…Tudyk says the newly-released “Serenity : Special Edition“ DVD has been selling so hot, that there’s talk in doing another movie. “They had to put [the new DVD] out because they’ve been selling out of the other one and so Universal’s like ‘So, let’s do another one’. And now… there’s now a chance there’s going to be another movie”…“Everybody in the Firefly crew – and that includes the ones who died in the movie – are excited about the prospect of doing another”. Nathan Fillion, says Tudyk, is especially keen. “We were out a couple of weeks ago together at a party and there was a bunch of people there, and he was like ‘Oh, look we’re Browncoats”.

Tudyk says he heard from creator Joss Whedon a few weeks back – but mainly about Tudyk’s role in the new Western “3:10 to Yuma”. “He sent me an email when it first came out because at first he thought I was a different character – by the trailer”, he laughs. “He was like ‘My god! You’re playing such a bad-ass!’ That was Ben Foster, who is such a bad-ass in that movie, and is just brilliant, just brilliant, and we both have a similar look – we both have polish genes – and anyway, Joss writes back ‘Sorry, I didn’t realise you were the sympathetic funny character – how would cast you as that?’. Joss, that would be you!”.

Joss Whedon: Hope for Sequel Rests with DVD

Sunday, August 5th, 2007

While at Comic Con RopeofSilicon was one of the lucky few to get a 1:1 sit down with writer/director Joss Whedon. Of course since Serenity’s unexplicable dissapointment at the box-office things haven’t gone so well for Joss, but he was more than willing to talk about such things as Serenity and the upcoming special edition DVD release, Wonder Woman and his future.

So after all is said and done, was Serenity profitable? Do you consider it a success?

Joss Whedon (JW): It’s a success to the studio or else we wouldn’t be doing a special edition DVD. They actually admitted as much on paper, which you know studios are loathe to do, and that was actually from the theatrical. Theatrical was a disappointment, as everyone knows, but it did go into the black. Then the DVD came and they took me aside and said “We can’t keep these things on the shelf. We want to do a special edition.” And I didn’t want to hear that because I knew it would have to be a truly special edition to make me happy. There had to be a real reason, some real goodies.

So what will the special edition have for us?

JW: We took some stuff from the region two version; the making of - a really beautiful one that’s a bit longer. It has the first read through for the movie with the cast, two years after the show ended. And it has the River Tam sessions, the stuff I did on the internet with Summer. We got to do another commentary too, Nathan, Summer, Ron and Adam - I made sure it didn’t go the same direction as the first commentary. It feels like this version will be something more for the people who would tend to buy both.

And they expect to sell around a kajillion copies?

JW: I believe it’s around eleventy kabillion.

So give me hope for a Serenity II

JW: Hope for it probably rests with this DVD.

Well I’ll buy one.

JW: Actually I will too, people ask me why I would buy my own DVD and I tell them do you have any idea how awesome it is to buy your own movie?

So then you’re saying we’ve got a chance?

JW: Well it’s probably not being discussed in boardrooms right now, but the fact of the matter is if it makes enough money sooner or later they say “hey, this is money!” Also there are paradigms that are much cheaper, it doesn’t have to be enormous. But on the other hand I’m happy to say all of my actors are working very hard. It’s not the same situation where we all threw in for pennies because we had to finish telling that story. Now that situation might be harder to bring about.
